Hola, amigas! How are you all?
I know it has been a while since I last shared a personal blog.
So what have I been up to since the finale of the Spanglish Girl Diaries? Well first there was my birthday trip to NYC with one of my best friends. It was truly one of the best girls trip, ever! My friend and I spent our days gallivanting around the city, visiting the top tourist and foodie spots.
What I loved most about NYC was the Latino presence. Spanish was everywhere and the Latino population was so diverse. Being from the West Coast, I didn’t grow up around large Dominican, Cuban, or Puerto Rican communities. Most Latinos I know are Mexican. So to be in NYC and to meet Latinos from such diverse backgrounds was truly exciting for me.
My favorite moment, was sitting on the subway, on my way to Conney Island, and this happened….
Then once at Conney Island, while walking the boardwalk, I came upon groups of proud Latinos celebrating their heritage. Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, they all set up spaces on the boardwalk, hung their flags, and blasted music for all to enjoy. It was absolutely beautiful.
And of course, there were the usual things that make NYC exciting, like the New York City Public Library, Time Square, The Brooklyn Bridge, China Town, Central Park, and so much more!
After my trip to NYC, the summer and fall months flew by. Before I knew it, the holidays were here. I just got back from visiting my family in Las Vegas for Christmas.
This year we made sure to celebrate big. My sisters and I threw a holiday dinner party for my mother and her sisters.
I went all out and brought home fancy Cheeses and meats from Wisconsin.
The main course at our dinner was prime rib and golden and red potatoes—and appetizers galore! A whole table spread.
And then there was the decorate your own cookies dessert station…
To spend the evening with my aunts and mother was truly a blessing. My mother is terminally ill and so, every Christmas with her, is truly a gift.
After dinner, we made crafts, played games, and just enjoyed each others company. For me, who lives far from home and doesn’t get see all my aunts together often, it was truly a fun and memorable night.
I returned home to the Midwest Tuesday. The biggest surprise was the below zero temperatures. Que Frio! While I do love the snow, I do not like the cold. To make matters worse, my car battery died at the gas station, which after a long flight home, was muy stressful. But, eventually, I got home to my cozy casita, unpacked, and laid in my warm bed happy to be home.
That night I thought about the year ahead and what I would like to achieve. Of course there are the usual resolutions, like lose weight (all those tamales and cookies at Christmas finally caught up with me…), save more money, be more organized, but aside from these usual goals, this year, I just want to live in the moment more. I’m so busy trying to achieve so much that time flies and before I know it another year has passed.
2o17 is but a blure, but looking back, if I had to highlight the most memorable moments, I would choose these…
No. 1 NYC, of course!
No. 2 Attending the Womens March in Chicago
No. 3, my God Daughter’s visit
This coming year, while I will still work hard to achieve my dreams, I want to take more time to just enjoy the little things. Like sunsets, a good book, and dinners with friends and family.
I hope you are all making plans for a wonderful New Year’s Eve. I am looking forward to doing nothing. I may go to dinner with friends, but after, I plan to come home, put on my pajamas, and ring in the New Year at home watching CNN, while face-timing my sisters and mom. To me, this is the perfect New Year’s Eve, especially after the busy year I had.
You can expect to hear from me more this year. My blogging hiatus/break has come to an end and I’m ready to return to novela blogging. I’ll be posting a blog weekly, on Fridays, once I find a novela to dedicate myself to…
Also coming this year, that line of Spanglish Girl products I promised last year… And, of course, many more fun blogs.
Talk to you soon!
