Lo Que La Vida Me Robo: Spanglish Girl’s Recap and Review (August 4-13)

If you have been watching the novela this week, you will probably understand why I found it necessary to post this:

Keep Calm SGG

Where to start? Well, first I’d like to apologize for the late post. To make it up to you, I plan to do another blog Saturday which covers the finale and includes many fun “look backs” at the novela, such as the most memorable “Oh No!” moments.

But until then, let’s talk about the last week and a half:

So Jose Luis ends up having to contact Montserrat and give her his whereabouts because Romina becomes gravely ill.  Alejandro and Montserrat race to the hospital and within a few days Romina’s health improves. But something even more amazing happens: Jose Luis realizes he has been a complete jerk and does a complete 180.  He informs Montserrat that he is going to drop the custody case against her and that he is going to allow her and Alejandro to live in peace. Montserrat and Alejandro are stunned, speechless.

I have to admit I was also surprised; I had to rewind a few times to make sure I hadn’t missed anything.

Then, after they have all returned to Agua Azul, Jose Luis dreams of Angelica and he has a heart to heart conversation with her. He realizes the only woman he has ever really loved is Angelica. In his dream, Angelica asks him if he still loves Montserrat, he then recalls all of his memories with Angelica and he receives some sort of confirmation through the flashbacks that it was Angelica who he has “truly” loved all along, not Montserrat.  Jose Luis even tells Montserrat to her face that he no longer loves her!

I have to say I’ve been waiting for this moment for a while now. I was starting to worry that Jose Luis was never going to let go of this whole “I love Montserrat” thing.  Truthfully, I didn’t think she deserved his love—Angelica did. Now, it is official: he is so over Montserrat! And rightly so, love should not be that complicated—geez…

I don’t think the novela did a good job of laying out this “ah ha” moment for Jose Luis. I was caught off guard because it was a little abrupt. One moment he is hiding and kidnapping Romina, the next she is ill and he has completely changed. I guess in the end it doesn’t matter, the old Jose Luis is back! And Single I might add…oh yea, it’s just a novela…

Now for some pretty depressing things: after the whole Jose Luis’s “turn around”, the novela took a turn for the worse. Brace yourself, it is all no bueno from here.

Let’s start by taking a moment of silence to remember Refugio (yes he died).

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………I cannot believe the writers killed him off! And, of course, it was after he and Esmeralda finally decided to make their marriage work.  Refugio was shot by Adolfo because he had the second letter from Ezequiel (which Esmeralda had been holding onto). Adolfo tried to work out a deal with Refugio, but Refugio wouldn’t budge. He played the whole “good cop” thing till the end. He refused to stay silent about Adolfo’s identity as el Alacran and Adolfo shot him. Muy triste.

Esmeralda handled it as I think any wife would: she is completely devastated. Especially since she spent all those months (or was it a whole year?) pushing him away and ignoring him. I know it’s just a novela, but maybe we can learn something from Refugio’s storyline: don’t waste time fighting with those you love—you never know how much time you have left with them.

As if Refugio death wasn’t depressing enough, then Adolfo died too. Now I’m not a fan of Adolfo’s, but I was really hoping he would chose to go to jail.  But no, till the end he chose to only care about himself. I know Pedro cornered him and ruined him, but he also chose to make money the “quick and easy” way. In the end it cost him his soul.

So how did Adolfo die? Well, it started on the day of his wedding with Josefina.  El Padrecito refused to marry them, and then Montserrat received a call from Pedro in which he informed her that Adolfo was el Alacran. Montserrat then told Nadia, and Nadia confronted Adolfo. Adolfo finally admitted that he is el Alacran. Nadia begged him to turn himself in and ordered him to tell Josefina or she would.

Adolfo told Josefina and Josefina asked him to do the right thing and turn himself in. Josefina also informed him that she would not marry him. Adolfo fell apart and lost it: he almost hit Josefina when she reached for the phone to call the police (I bet she was happy she didn’t marry him!).  Adolfo then said his goodbyes to Victoria and Nadia. He planned to escape, but Pedro pulled up and coerced him to get into a car with him so that they could run away and hide together (I don’t understand why Adolfo listened!).

So Pedro and Adolfo hide out in a creepy broken down stone building waiting for a helicopter to arrive to take them away.  Meanwhile, Dimitrio learns about Adolfo’s identity and he sets out to find him. Pedro, however, did what he has been waiting a long time to do: he betrayes Adolfo by letting him board the helicopter and then kicking him off (he literally used his legs to kick him out of the helicopter) as Dimitrio arrives to confront Adolfo.

Dimitrio and Adolfo get into a gun/fist fight. Adolfo empties his gun’s ammunition, but still points it at Dimitrio as if to shoot him and Dimitrio, unknowing that Adolfo’s gun is unloaded, shoots Adolfo. In the end, Adolfo chose death over Jail.  Josefina arrives in time to see Adolfo die and she is devastated.

Now for my two cents: That Adolfo makes me so mad. I want to hate him but I feel bad for him. His death scene was pretty depressing. Truthfully, I cried a little. Only because Josefina was able to talk to him and he told her, “you saved me.” I think he was speaking poetically: meaning that although he died, she saved him as much as he could have been saved.

Even more heartbreaking was when Nadia and Victoria found out. They too found comfort in the fact that Adolfo did what he did to protect them and also because Pedro manipulated him. I guess in the end we can take a lesson from Adolfo’s storyline: don’t chase money the easy, quick, and dirty way because in the end you lose your soul and hurt those you love the most.

On a brighter note, now Dimitrio and Josefina can be together… I know that seems so insensitive since Adolfo just died—but you know you were thinking the same thing!

Now, on to some more depressing things… I know this week and a half has been a hard one on all of us viewers. I have to say, it’s affected me in my personal life: I’m a little cranky and down.

So as if Refugio and Adolfo’s death were not bad enough, we almost lost Montserrat and Victor. I say almost because there were a few moments when I thought for sure they were both dead.

So let’s start with Montserrat: Montserrat finally receives “the call.” Pedro is ready to make her pay her dues with him and the silly girl actually does as he says! I could just see all of us shaking our heads thinking: estas Loca! Why go where Pedro tells you to go! That’s like the scene in a scary movie when the person walks into an alley alone at night. I swear.

So yes, Pedro tells her to meet him in 10 minutes and there she goes, to meet him. He then has one of his “guys” take her to a building (as if it isn’t bad enough she agrees to meet him, she then gets into a car and allows them to take her somewhere).

Before I continue, she could have been showering with Alejandro, but she told him no and then she got the call from Pedro. You know she must have regretted that choice….So back to the building.

So she is taken to a secret building and Pedro is there waiting. He then calls Alejandro and Jose Luis to tell them that Montserrat’s life is down to the minutes.  Jose Luis and Alejandro and Dimitrio search everywhere to locate Montserrat, but they can’t find her. Then they find a camera that Pedro set up so that they can see what is going on: Montserrat is in a tank of sorts and it is filling up quickly with water.  As the minutes pass, the tank fills more and more until at last she is drowning.

Then! Alejandro and Jose Luis arrive, break the tank, and Montserrat is saved. But don’t get too excited because while this was going on, Pedro arrives at the house where Victor, Nadia, and all of the kids are and he strikes a deal with Graciela (who is also there). Graciela allows Pedro in the house, but only because he promises to only take Victoria and not Laurito Jr. or Romina. In true Graciela style, she is evil and selfish till the end.

Meanwhile Victor tries to fight off Pedro (isn’t that the story of his life) and the poor guy fails, as always. Pedro ties Victor to a post in the living room and he is helpless. Pedro then enters the room where the kids are with Nadia, and he informs her that he is taking all the kids.  As Pedro is leaving, Graciela confronts him and reminds him that he is only supposed to take Victoria. Pedro doesn’t stick to his deal and he takes all the kids. Victor is horrified to learn that Graciela was in on the whole thing and even more surprised to see that she is able to walk.

Graciela realizes that Victor is likely going to tell Alejandro and Montserrat that she cut a deal with Pedro and that she is not sick, so Graciela shoots Victor to save herself from having to face her kids. Victor appears to be dead, but then he comes back to life and is rushed to a hospital. He regains consciousness and he tells Nadia, Alejandro and Montserrat about Graciela.

So Graciela is a liar pants on fire. But her lies have gone beyond what we imagined possible. She lied about being sick to manipulate her children into loving her again.  But tomorrow it seems that all of her lies are finally going to catch up to her. In the previews we see her graveling for forgiveness and then I think we see her fall from a building? Hmmmmm—we’ll find out in 24 hours.

As for Victor, he is alive and I am so happy. Had he died it may have just been too much. So today’s episode left off with Amelia arriving to Pedro’s “secret” home against her own will. Pedro kidnaps her to force her to take care of the children. I have to say that Pedro’s obsession with children is odd. He is such a dark and angry person, yet he “loves” kids. Weird. I am just waiting for the moment that Pedro finally pays for all he has done. I hate how he always wins. Whose with me: Pedro can’t win no more!

Ironically, I thought Graciela’s chance to redeem herself was to take Pedro down when he came for the children. What I didn’t realize was that she was in on the whole thing.  I have always felt that the two are equally evil, so who better to take down Pedro than Graciela? Wouldn’t that have been a nice ending. Oh well.

Well my novela fans, this was it for the last week and a half. We have two more days left of the novela and by the looks of things, it is about to get even better! I’ll post on Saturday and like I mentioned earlier, I plan to dedicate a whole blog to the finale episode.

Good night!
