Lo Que La Vida Me Robó: Spanglish Girl’s Recap and Review June 16-20

At this point, I should know better than to be surprised by anything that happens in this novela, but   just when I think things can’t get crazier, they do!

This week, Jose Luis discovered Montserrat and Alejandro in bed together at a hotel. As you can imagine, he went loco!  It was actually a very stressful scene: Jose Luis took Montserrat from the room at gunpoint, and then forbid her from leaving their home.  Jose Luis also tried forcing her to sleep with him.  Demetrio arrived in time to hear Montserrat pleading for Jose Luis to get off her.  Jose Luis and Demetrio got into a fist fight, and Jose Luis tried to choke him. Macario arrived and was able to get Jose Luis off of Demetrio, but then Jose Luis turned on Macario and they almost had a shootout. Did I mention Jose Luis was drunk?

It was a pretty dark scene because Jose Luis’s behavior, by many measures, would—in reality—be considered abusive. Not cool and not ok. On a lighter note, I kept thinking that Demetrio should have brought Monica with him: she would have taken care of Jose Luis and maybe then he wouldn’t have spent the night with Josefina… Yes you read right: Demetrio and Josefina had you know what!

I was so disappointed—Monica doesn’t deserve that…Adolfo does. Demetrio clearly has feelings for Josefina—that speech about having felt nothing isn’t fooling anyone. Further, Josefina crying in the bathroom and Demetrio looking stunned that she said she “felt the same way,” says it all: they need to just get back together.

Monica, of course, was devastated, but she pulled herself together and gave Demetrio the boot from the Marina for having lied about Alejandro’s whereabouts.  I’m guessing she is also going to pack her bags and leave the house that they share.  Who knows if this will lead to a rekindling of Demetrio and Josefina’s love for each other—after all, the door is now wide open.

Now if everything I have said so far shocks you, wait—there is more! Maria killed Sandro once she found out he stole the will from her.  Maria realizes the will is gone because Alejandro accepts her offer to sleep with him in return for the will.  Even creepier, Maria channels her inner Montserrat by putting on a blond wig that makes her look identical to Montserrat from the back, and she wore it to kill Sandro.  Sandro, thinking he is going to meet Montserrat (he decided to give her the will because he learned Graciela and Fabiola were in cahoots), doesn’t see it coming and is ambushed in Fabiola’s home. Once he gives Maria the will back—she shot him.

Fabiola sees Maria leave and she thinks it is Montserrat. She calls Graciela and Graciela takes care of  Sandro’s body by calling Pedro, who calls Adolfo, to clean up the scene.  Graciela puts two and two together and realizes it was Maria who killed Sandro. Fabiola, however, still is not convinced.  Graciela then decides that in order to control the situation that she must clear Alejandro’s name, so she comes clean about Alejandro’s “involvement” in Benjamin’s death.  She visits the Judge that ruled Alejandro was an imposter, and twists the truth to put the blame for having lied on Sandro who is now dead (thanks to Maria).

I’m guessing Graciela is most worried about the money she stands to receive from Alejandro, but I also can’t help but wonder if maybe she is coming clean to ensure that Maria is put in jail (she tells the judge that Maria and Juventino poisoned Benjamin).  By putting Maria away, she may also hope to prove that Maria, not Montserrat, killed Sandro.  In the end, Alejandro decided  not to sleep with Maria, so really, Sandro died for nothing.

Alejandro still met with Maria to tell her he had changed his mind. Maria pleaded shamelessly for him to change his decision, but he refused.  Instead, he headed to the hotel to meet Montserrat. Maria followed him and, as a result, discovered Montserrat waiting for him.  Crazed with jealousy, Maria informed Jose Luis where to find them. Maria decides that she would rather see Alejandro dead than with Montserrat (crazy).

You already know what happened next because I started my blog with the scene where Jose finds them and chaos ensues.  As I said in my first line: Just as I think things can’t get even crazier, they do!

After Jose Luis arrests Alejandro, Montserrat–feeling she has no other option–decides she will renounce Alejandro if it means Jose Luis will release him. But prior to her deciding that, Ezequiel convinces Jose Luis to let Alejandro go free (Ezequiel has no choice—Carlota has threatened to make his life hell if Alejandro isn’t freed). Jose Luis agrees because Ezequiel reminds him that Pedro hates Alejandro as much as Jose Luis does, so it’s only a matter of time before Pedro gets rid of Alejandro forever.

Jose Luis decides Ezequiel is right: especially because Ezequiel points out that if Jose Luis is behind Alejandro’s incarceration, Montserrat will never forgive him. By allowing Pedro to take care of Alejandro, Jose Luis wipes his hands of any “wrong doing.”

Now for my thoughts: Jose Luis is being a jerk and he needs to grow up:  He can’t force Montserrat to love him. As for Graciela, I’m not sure anymore what she is up to and what her motives are. One part of me thinks she is trying to ensure the money Alejandro has promised her, but the other side of me thinks she might really be worried about Montserrat—she doesn’t want Montserrat to have to go to jail for Maria’s act.

I also don’t understand how Graciela plans to play Pedro; after all, he is going to be livid when he finds out she cleared Alejandro of the charges. As for Demetrio and Josefina—have they learned nothing from Montserrat’s love triangle!  They saw firsthand the pain and craziness it caused Jose Luis, and yet, they slept with each other the same night they tried to save Montserrat from Jose Luis.

I can’t help but wonder where these novela writers get their ideas! At this rate, I don’t want to say that we are near the end because just as I think the novela is winding down—something new and crazier happens.

Well, my fellow Novela Lovers, that is all! Finally.  Sorry I posted so late, I had a busy day–I was busy cheering on the U.S.A.
