Lo Que La Vida Me Robó: Spanglish Girl’s Recap and Review June 2-6

Oh how the lies are unravelling this week: so many emotions and accusations were at the forefront of this week’s episodes.  My favorite scene was when Rosario confronted Graciela and finally showed her who is boss. If you watched, you probably were cheering Rosario on. That slap was the cherry on top of the sundae—a grand finale of sorts to the old Rosario. The new Rosario has made it clear that if you mess with Alejandro, you mess with her—the Rosario that survived in jail.

Then there were the reunions this week: Laurito Jr. and Victoria finally saw Victor and Alejandro. The meetings, however, were just temporary. Victoria still had to return home to Pedro and Laurito Jr., I’m sure, will return home to Jose Luis, or maybe not…

As of this moment, Alejandro and Montserrat have agreed to run away together. But before they do that, Montserrat plans to get her finances in order. Montserrat plans to sell her house, and she plans to do so without Jose Luis finding out. I believe she is delusional: how do you sell a house that you and your spouse live in and not tell him? I guess in a novela it is possible; although, I get the feeling Jose Luis will find out, and that will be the start of the end.

But rewind: I got ahead of myself. Before the children reunited with their fathers, temporarily, and before Montserrat and Alejandro decided to run away together, Jose Luis revealed to Montserrat that Alejandro was in coma, and that he kept the news from her so she would marry him. Montserrat, of course, already knew Alejandro was alive, but she played dumb and used Jose Luis’s lie against him by demanding he give her a divorce. Jose Luis said he will not divorce her, so Montserrat decides to tell him the truth: that Alejandro is not dead and they have been seeing each other.

But before she can tell Jose Luis the truth, Victor arrives at their house (per Alejandro’s request) and interrupts Montserrat and Jose Luis’s fight (#perfecttiming #onlyinanovela). Jose Luis is stunned to see Victor. Montserrat, confused by Victor’s visit, plays along and pretends she is devastated when Victor tells her that Alejandro was disconnected and died.  Jose Luis, however, finds Victor’s visit odd and begins to question whether or not Alejandro is truly dead.  Montserrat, although she played along at first, decides she needs to tell Jose Luis the truth, so he can give her a divorce.

However, Montserrat changes her mind after she eavesdrops on a telephone conversation that Jose Luis is having with Refugio. During the conversation, Jose Luis tells Refugio that if Alejandro is alive and near, he will put him in jail.  Upon hearing this, Montserrat races to meet with Alejandro to tell him what she overheard, and it is then that they decide to run away.

Whew, that was a lot to explain! Are you still with me? But wait there is more! I feel like such a chismosa (gossiper)…

While all of the above was taking place, Maria set out on a vendetta of her own: she plans to payback everyone who wronged Alejandro. On her list of people to payback,  Graciela and Fabiola are at the top. Maria visited them both and threatened to reveal their lies. The most damaging of the lies is that Graciela partnered with Juventino to kill Benjamin, and that Fabiola lied to disinherit Alejandro. Maria has also set the wheels in motion to meet with Alejandro: she had Adolfo tell Alejandro that she has the original will.

So now that Alejandro knows she has the original will, we have to wait and see if he actually looks for her and if that changes his mind about running away. After all, his bigger goal is to clear his name.  I think meeting with Maria is a double edged sword: the girl is going to help him, I’m sure, but also wreak havoc on his relationship with Montserrat. We already know she is capable of murder—granted she was on drugs then—but still…

Last, but not least, Ezequiel is informed by Jose Luis that Alejandro may be alive. Jose Luis puts out an order to all of the police in Agua Azul to search for Alejandro; in addition, Refugio involves the Navy. I get the feeling that next week things are going to move fast. If Alejandro is found, chaos is going to break out, and I’m not sure what Alejandro and Montserrat’s end game is: will they stay and fight to clear Alejandro’s name with Maria’s help (she has the will), or will they run away and never return again.

I’m thinking option two is the best: I wouldn’t want to stay in a corrupt town where there are a handful of people who are trying to hurt me. At this point, I feel like we are truly nearing the end: if Montserrat and Alejandro run away, there will be no need for the other storylines to end because with them gone, the story is over.

I think the true tragedy of this novela is going to be Jose Luis. Regardless of how Jose Luis’s storyline ends, it seems that either way he loses: life has taken much from him—even the one woman who truly loved him: Angelica.  And now because of one lie, he has likely lost Montserrat’s friendship, forever.

Until next week,
